Embedding Spirituality Across Our Curriculum
At Houghton CE School, our curriculum is shaped by our deeply held Christian vision: “Learning Together in a Caring Christian Community,” rooted in the words of Psalm 23. Guided by this vision, we seek to nurture every child so that they feel safe, valued and inspired, just as the shepherd cares for his flock.
We believe that spirituality is not confined to Religious Education or collective worship but is a golden thread woven through all National Curriculum subjects. Through carefully planned learning experiences, we provide children with opportunities to explore life’s ‘big questions’, reflect on meaning and purpose, and develop a sense of awe and wonder about the world around them. This enables all pupils—regardless of faith or background—to grow spiritually, morally, socially and academically.
Our curriculum empowers children to:
- Experience moments of awe, wonder and curiosity through subjects such as science, geography, art and music
- Reflect and question, developing a deeper understanding of themselves, others and the wider world
- Recognise that there is something beyond the material world, encouraging openness, imagination and creativity
- Develop empathy, self-awareness and an appreciation of different perspectives
Central to this approach are our core Christian values of Respect, Responsibility and Compassion, which underpin all teaching and learning.
- Through Respect, pupils learn to value themselves, others and the diversity of the world God has created
- Through Responsibility, they are encouraged to care for their actions, their learning and the environment
- Through Compassion, they are guided to show kindness, understanding and service to others
These values are not taught in isolation but are lived out across the curriculum—within classroom interactions, collaborative learning, enrichment opportunities and real-life contexts.
By embedding spirituality across our curriculum, we aim to educate the whole child—mind, body and spirit—so that every pupil flourishes academically while also developing the character, resilience and moral purpose to make a positive difference in the world. In doing so, we remain faithful to our vision of a school community where all can grow, thrive and walk together with care, guidance and hope.
