Collective Worship
Collective Worship Policy
Collective worship sessions make use of planning from Roots and Fruits, Values for Life, assemblies.org, as well as reflections created and developed by Houghton staff. We share stories from world religions that explore & reflect our current Christian value and often link our collective worship to national events, for example Children's Mental Health week and Antibullying week.
We invite visitors to take part in Collective Worship to help us learn about special events and hear real life stories and experiences. These help our children engage with the values we are learning. For example we have had local shepherds and their sheep, a past staff members sharing about a charity trip, Argentinians from a church in Argentina dancing for us and local outdoor instructors, not forgetting the NISCU puppets who the children love to see!
We also use Picture News - a resource exploring up-to-date current affairs. Using Picture News provides opportunity for our children to explore important topics from around the world in a safe environment where they can ask questions, discuss and form opinions and make links with our Christian values. This is where we see our British Values being practiced, discussed and played out.
Parents do have the right to withdraw their children on religious grounds from acts of collective worship, but members of staff feel that pupils who are excluded would miss part of the corporate life of the school. If any parents wish to exercise their right, they are asked to discuss this matter with the Headteacher, and alternative arrangements will be made.
