We want to work together with parents to provide children with the best possible start in life. Part of our role as adults is helping the children we take care of to develop important life skills. Attendance and punctuality are two very important life skills.

Although we recognise that it is the parent’s responsibility to ensure their child is in school and learning, we also play our part.

Houghton C of E School is encouraging and celebrating good attendance and punctuality in many ways.

Research shows that there is a direct link between attendance and achievement—the less a student attends school the poorer their progress is likely to be. It is common sense really because if a child is not in class then they are not learning!

What do the attendance figures actually mean though? What is good/bad attendance?

For example, 90% attendance, is this good or bad?

• 90% attendance equals 1/2 a day missed every week! Is that good? Would your boss put up with that? It is more like part-time than full-time.
• If a student has 90% attendance over a school year then they will miss 1 month of school—approximately 100 lessons!
• Over 5 years at school that means that a student will miss 1/2 a school year—a massive amount of time.
• Further research has found that for every 17 days of school lost per year a student will drop, on average, a full GCSE grade.
The school wants to improve attendance so that children’s achievement will be maximised!

What to do if your child is absent from school:

1. On the first day of absence you should call the school office before 9am on 01228 593992.
2. You must do this daily, for each day your child is absent.
3. A note or email should be sent to the school office on their return to school.
4. If your child is absent from school and we have not heard from you, you will
receive a text message asking you to contact the school office. If no response
is received you will be contacted by telephone.
