Saturday 6th October saw our year 5 and 6 football team compete in the first tournament of the year. The tournament for large primary schools (over 100 pupils) was held at Robert Ferguson, with the winner advancing to the county final. Houghton’s team was fantastic, topping their league undefeated (beating Kingmoor, Upperby and Bishop Harvey Goodwin and drawing with Belle-Vue) and reaching the semi-finals, eventually losing out to Norman Street for a place in the final. Reaching the semi-finals represents Houghton’s best ever result at this tournament, one of the biggest and most competitive of the year, and the team deserve huge respect and congratulations for their achievement! Everyone raised their game and showed their commitment to the team. The games included some great saves from Jake Brown, some fantastic defending and tackles, some flowing passing moves and some simply amazing goals from James Wallace. The team was: Jack Cowton (Captain), George Southwell, Fran Telford, James Wallace, Lewis Robinson, Jake Fell, Jake Brown and Brandon Wallce. A huge thank you also goes to our Houghton School football coach, Hamish Phillips. Hamish has helped prepare the children for the tournament, hosting extra training sessions (which obviously worked!) and was their to coach them on the day.
