At Houghton C of E School we empower our children with a ‘CAN DO’ attitude in mathematics.  We encourage children to develop their knowledge and understanding of mathematics and aim for all pupils to enjoy and achieve in mathematics and become confident mathematicians.


We aim that all pupils:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication, including in unfamiliar contexts and to model real-life scenarios.
  • Can reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and develop and present a justification, argument or proof using mathematical language.


Our beliefs: We believe that ability within Mathematics is not fixed. We are developing the mindsets of children and adults alike to develop a Growth Mindset and a ‘We Can’ attitude to Mathematics. We believe that through quality first teaching and intelligent practice, children learning together and immediate intervention that all children have the potential to ‘go deeper’ and broaden their understanding of mathematical concepts.

Science Curriculum

Through science, pupils at Houghton CE School will continue to deepen their respect, care and appreciation of the natural world with time for spiritual reflection. Our Christian values of Respect and Wisdom underpin the teaching of science.

Children need to link science to themselves and the world around them.

Children need to test their thoughts and questions using practical experiences inside and outside the classroom.

English Curriculum

We aim to develop in our children the ability to communicate effectively in speech and writing and to listen with understanding. Our aim is that children read, write and speak with accuracy and fluency. We plan for all children to reach their full potential through having high standards of English and developing all children’s love of literature.

National Curriculum

A high quality education in English will teach pupils to write and speak fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others and through their reading and listening, others can communicate with them.

Wellbeing and Relationships

Our Philosophy:        

 Children need the knowledge and capability to take care of themselves and others.


  • Children make informed and wise choices.
  • Use the school Values for Life to uphold virtues.
  • Know what healthy and respectful relationship are like.
  • Know how to maintain healthy and respectful relationships.

Wellbeing and Relationships (like SMSC) is embedded throughout daily life at Houghton C of E School. We model positive relationships, self image and communication skills with others in all our day-to-day interactions. It is also taught in discrete lessons. Music Curriculum

National Curriculum

Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. High quality music education should engage and inspire children to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As children progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music.

Aims of our school staff

-To promote a confident, positive attitude towards the learning and use of Music, making it an enjoyable experience.

Physical Education

At Houghton School, we believe that a high quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to exceed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. We strive to provide a wide range of opportunities for our pupils to become physically confident and to support their health and fitness. We provide opportunities for all children to compete in sport and other activities in order to help build character and to help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

We aim to ensure that all pupils:

  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • Are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities
  • Lead healthy, active lives
