Forest Schools

February 23, 2015

400dpiLogo1We have now completed two sessions at Netherby Woods, so we would like to share some of our experiences and photos with you.

Each Friday we meet up with two groups from other schools, Longtown and Blackford, near the entrance to the Forest Schools site and we all help to carry our provisions for the day. It’s a short walk up through the woods and across some very muddy ditches, grasping all manner of supplies, hoping not to drop anything into the puddles or the stream!

When we get to the central area we can offload the water, the food, the tools and bags of gloves and anything else relevant to that particular day.

Last week we followed the usual drill, before going off to play our first game of the day which was ‘Wild Men of the Woods’. This proved so popular that it was replayed many times throughout the day.

Following the opening game it’s important to light the fire ready for lunch or hot chocolate. The first week took a lot of effort and coaxing to get the fire going but we managed it in the end. Carissa lit the fire last week using cotton wool and making a spark, which required some practise but she managed it in the end.

Tom got involved with a group who were building a bridge across the stream using long thin logs and some flat pieces of wood which were nailed together. Some of the children began to make bird boxes, while others chopped firewood, learnt about coppicing and swung on the tree swing.

Tom and Carissa were shown how to carve a spoon from a piece of green wood. We hope to see them when they are finished.
