Easter Experience

The whole school have had a fabulous time visiting St John’s Church and taking part in Experience Easter.

This programme has been written by the Diocese of Gloucester and has been used in many churches throughout the country for a number of years.

The programme tells the story of Easter in an interactive way by dividing the story into six stations.

The first was Hopes and Dreams where children think about Palm Sunday using stones to drew their own symbol of their hopes and dreams. When they had done this they placed the stones on a cairn next to a cross.

Remember Me was the last Supper and the children were able to take bread and drink juice and think about what this meant for the disciples.

The Servant King told the story of the washing of the disciples feet and the children were able to reflect upon Jesus’ role as a servant and what that means for us today. They were able to dip their hand into the water and make the sign of the cross on their hand and to reflect on how they can serve others by helping parents and friends.

Alone was the area set up to represent Gethsemane where Jesus prayed before he was crucified. The children loved being able to make models in plasticine of times when they have felt alone themselves.

Sharing our Sorrows was set up to depict the crucifixion with a large cross, draped with red fabric and red ribbons, purple fabric and small crosses with words such as sad, lonely, hungry and homeless. The children used the ribbons to pray for the people in the world who are suffering.

Resurrection was the final station and it was an empty tomb upon the stage of the church so that it took a focal point. All the children came together for this final station, heard the story and then had a cross or angel shaped biscuit and a chocolate egg.

All the children and staff thoroughly enjoyed their visit and are looking forward to doing it again next year, but with a bigger tomb so that they can go inside instead of just peeping in!
