Mathematics

At Houghton C of E School we empower our children with a ‘CAN DO’ attitude in mathematics.  We encourage children to develop their knowledge and understanding of mathematics and aim for all pupils to enjoy and achieve in mathematics and become confident mathematicians.

We aim that all pupils:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication, including in unfamiliar contexts and to model real-life scenarios.
  • Can reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and develop and present a justification, argument or proof using mathematical language.

Our beliefs: We believe that ability within Mathematics is not fixed. We are developing the mindsets of children and adults alike to develop a Growth Mindset and a ‘We Can’ attitude to Mathematics. We believe that through quality first teaching and intelligent practice, children learning together and immediate intervention that all children have the potential to ‘go deeper’ and broaden their understanding of mathematical concepts.

Mathematics Aims and Vision

English Curriculum

We aim to develop in our children the ability to communicate effectively in speech and writing and to listen with understanding. Our aim is that children read, write and speak with accuracy and fluency. We plan for all children to reach their full potential through having high standards of English and developing all children’s love of literature.

National Curriculum

A high quality education in English will teach pupils to write and speak fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others and through their reading and listening, others can communicate with them.

PSHE

“PSHE education is a planned programme of learning through which children and young people acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives. As part of a whole school approach, PSHE develops the qualities and attributes pupils need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society.” This is taken from the PSHE Association. Although PSHE remains non-statutory we make provision for personal, social, health and economic education, following guidance from the National Curriculum.

PSHE (like SMSC) is embedded throughout daily life at Houghton C of E School. We model positive relationships, self image and communication skills with others in all our day-to-day interactions. PSHE and Citizenship cannot always be confined to specific timetabled time. PSHE and Citizenship is delivered within a whole school approach and is taught through three core themes. For further information about the teaching of PSHE see the PSHE Policy (found in the our school section of the website).

-To promote confidence and competence in music skills,

-To provide opportunities for the development of composition and musical skills where relevant across the curriculum.
